East Aurora’s Hamlin Park Tree Project
The Village of East Aurora, NY, had important tree work to do on the beloved Hamlin Park. We started to see a decline in the park trees in recent years. Many trees were dangerous or were not properly taken care of. The limbs and the branches were showing signs of being a danger to the local park, it’s infrastsurcrure, and most importantly, village residents and park visitors.
What Types of Tree Work Had to Be Done?
Several of the trees had to be pruned and, in some extreme cases, removed for the safety of the people of East Aurora and for the safety of the other trees in Hamlin Park. Additionally, to reduce compacted soil and improve nutrient flow, the soil was aerated.
Tree Risk Assessment
The tree work that was done begins with a meticulous tree risk assessment, which qualifies each tree as a low, moderate, or high risk. From there, each tree is carefully examined to determine how to best reduce the risks it poses. The majority of trees were preserved safely, but some trees were too high a risk to people and the environment and needed to be removed to mitigate risks to people, property, and other nearby trees.
“To me, it’s a difficult decision to make the decision to take a tree down. It’s a living, breathing thing.” – Jared Webber, Owner of Bradley Tree
Tree Pruning for Safety and Longevity.
Alongside it, tree pruning is done to increase safety, remove dangerous limbs, and set the tone for the younger trees to ensure that in the future they grow strong, safe, and healthy. Tree pruning was one of the most important goals of the Hamlin Park project.
“Hamlin Park is really a gem in the center of our town” – Luke Wochensky, Mayor of East Aurora
Soil Aeration to Improve Nutrient Flow
Hamlin Park has a great deal of compacted soil, so we need to do tree soil aeration. The process of loosening compacted soil around a tree’s root zone to increase oxygen, water, and nutrient access. This is critically important for the long-term health of the trees.
Tree Planting for the Future
Finally, East Aurora will discuss planting new trees in Hamlin Park to have a healthy and safe grove for the future. The types of trees that will be planted are determined by nearby obstructions, soil conditions, trees that will be phased out in the future, and other factors.
“We are replanting as much as we can every year, and we’re going to have a tree canopy for the future” – Jeff Stoll, East Aurora’s General Foreman for The Department of Public Works.
