Why Does a Type of Tree Work Need to Be Done
Hamlin Park Tree Project
East Aurora’s Hamlin Park has had some important work that needed to be done on its trees for the health and longevity of the trees, as well as the safety of the parkgoers
Because of decay and the overall poor health of some of the trees, we had to go and meticulously make the difficult decision of which trees needed to come down due to their high risk.
Necessary Tree Removal
Many trees, despite having health issues, did not have to come down and were preservable. By pruning a dangerous dead limb and doing structural pruning, a tree can go from a high-risk to a low-risk, without the need to remove the entire tree.
Structural Tree Pruning
Doing structural pruning is most important to do while the tree is small. By doing it early in the tree’s life, you can set the tone for that tree’s growth while only making a very small cut. If the structural pruning is not done while the tree is young, a small problem can grow into a major risk of collapse that is much more challenging to fix, while also being much more harmful to the tree.
Reducing Soil Compaction and Improving Nutrient Access
Soil compaction is also a major concern for the long-term health of the tree. Especially in park conditions, the soil around the roots of the tree gets compacted and tough, which is usually caused by sustained foot traffic, lawnmower use, and other factors. When the soil gets compacted by the base of a tree, nutrients become harder for the tree to collect, and rot starts to set into the tree.
Additionally, in park and backyard conditions, the leaves that the trees use to essentially fertilize themselves are cleaned up, making nutrients even more difficult for a tree to get.
Compacted soil is solved by airspade aeration. This loosens up the soil so the trees can collect nutrients more effectively. Additionally, to solve to nutritonal defficent, mulch is added to the base of the trees, and as that mulch decays, much-needed nutrients are added to the soil.
