What is Hemlock Woolly Adelgid?
Hemlock Woolly Adelgid is native to Asia and is an invasive aphid-like insect that threatens the North American hemlock population. Managing Hemlock Woolly Adelgid in Hamburg
Methods of Treatment for Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Infestations
The state and tree care companies like Bradley Trees have a few methods of controlling and managing HWA. There’s biological control, which involves introducing natural predators in infested areas to feed on the pests to reduce their population, primarily done by the DEC and New York State Hemlock Initiative.
There’s also chemical control, which can be administered to infected trees or as a preventative measure by licensed professionals. This method is useful in home settings, where the number of trees is more limited, and for high-value trees. There are two separate chemicals that each are effective against the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, but combined they not only kill the infestation but also protect the tree for a while.
